Gotta Have It: Preppy: Cultivating Ivy Style

This 170 page hardcover book, by Jeffrey Banks and Doria de La Chapelle, takes a look at the fashion, history, roots, growth, and offshoots of the American preppy style.

Preppy explores the prep fashion evolution from its origins of elite east coast universities to its influence around the world, and presence on the fashion runway. This book publishes photos from editorials, and personal photographs from the original Ivy elites.

The book looks at all aspects of men's and women's preppy fashion, including: Oxford shirts, khakis, Shetland sweaters, Peter Pan collars, madras pants and Lilly Pulitzer tropical blooms.

The authors also take a look at designers who helped to influence the preppy look, like J. Press, Brooks Brothers, and Ralph Lauren--designers who marketed a lifestyle, as well as a look. There is also a feature on 21st-century Ivy stylists and fashion labels who have combined preppy with modern design.

Foreword by Lilly Pulitzer. Available on Amazon for $28.48.

Gotta Have It: Skier Controlled Tow Boat

Anyone out there who has ever water skied, or wakeboarded, is going to want this. I've been wakeboarding once, but I can still relate to this product. When I got up on the board, the driver of the boat simply pulled me in a straight line. I don't want to complain, or sound cocky, since I am a complete novice, but it did get a little, well, boring. I just wanted the driver to turn or something; add a little challenge.

With this Skier Controlled Tow Boat, from Hammacher Schlemmer, you no longer have to worry about the driver taking you where you want to go. This boat is controlled from a remote of the handle of the tow rope by the skier, and can reach speeds of up to 40 MPH. This is sure to bring countless hours of fun on the lake next summer. The cost of the Skier Controlled Tow Boat: $17,000. However, shipping is 4-6 weeks, so I think it's a little late to order it for Christmas. You can purchase the Skier Controlled Tow Boat here.

Gotta Have It: Water Soaked Knee Hockey Rink

Move over Slip-and-Slide, you've been replaced. This is the Slip-and-Slide on steroids and turned into a game--nay, a sport. It is marketed to kids, but the real target audience here should be college kids. Most likely, this will be turned into a drinking game and score will need to be kept with a scorzie or two. This game puts two players squaring off on a 9'x5' rink, that shoots fountains 2' high on both sides. This rink can be purchased at Hammacher Schlemmer for $49.95 (I believe that price is Canadian). Just think of the hours of fun that can be had by having a Slipe-and-Slide upgraded into a hockey rink.

Gotta Have It: The Scorzie

A few things go hand in hand with summer: drinking, and backyard games. Unfortunately, most of us don't have that sweet scoreboard set up in the backyard to keep score of our cornhole game. Odds are that the people watching the game aren't willing, or aren't sober enough, to keep score of the game for you. What do you do? Enter the scorzie. The scorzie is a coozie with bands at that the top that keep score of two teams. Not only only does the scorzie keep score, but it keeps your drink cold at the same time. How many people can even multi-task that much in the summer? Well, I guess you'll have to in order to hold your drink and change the dial on the scorzie to the correct score. Just think of all the backyard game arguments this will end! Well, until people start trying to cheat and turning the dial to a higher score than they actually have. You can purchase your very own scorzie here!
